Sebastien Tellier - L'incroyable Verite

I actually saw him play live when he opened for Air. I wasn't paying too
much attention what with all the young kids coming out to see Air and the
long lines to get beer. It sounded OK, but I was mostly impressed by the
accompanying theramin player. I'd never seen anyone play theramin with such
precision until then. So, I wasn't even thinking of buying this album until
one day I got an order for T-shirts from over seas. He insisted on paying
with credit card, so I had to think of a way I could use his credit card
somehow. I had been wanting to buy some cd's, so I proposed to him that
I would buy some cd's with his card. He trusted me to not go on a wild shopping
spree and I tried not to go over what I was supposed to get for the shirts.
It was tricky to be able to come to a close amount with tax and shipping
and stuff. After a few tries, I ended up selecting this album among other
cd's. I wanted to get some other stuff first, but I couldn't work them in
with this budget. I did kind of want to hear the beautiful theramin again,
so this ended up making its way to my cd player. What actually was on the
album was not much thramin at all and I was pleasntly surprised how good
it was. It's not a very happy go lucky kind of music, but if you read my
review of orchestra du soleil, this album is in a way like its darker counterpart.
I imagined this more like a soundtrack to a post party scene at night kind
of desolte and quiet, but then something goes horribly wron. I guess it's
sort of deceptive with this gentle looking guy with a bow tie first singing
mellow songs, but then it gets very melancholy and dark. The title "L'incroyable
Verite" which I think menas "the incredible truth" might
be an indication that he wrote these songs in a sort of cathartic way. Anyway,
I think it's pretty substantial piece of work and it's no wonder that Air
relased his album from their label.
